The Heinrich Böll Foundation in Nigeria

The Heinrich Böll Foundation (hbs) started its work in Nigeria in 1995. With its headquarters now in Abuja and a liaison office in Lagos.

The Heinrich Böll Stiftung is the German Green Political Foundation. Affiliated to the "Alliance '90 / The Greens" political party represented in Germany's federal parliament and based in Berlin, it conducts and supports civic educational activities worldwide.

An introduction to our namesake

Our foundation is named after the German author and Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll (1917-1985), who is one of the most important and best-known writers of the Federal Republic of Germany. "Bound by the times and my contemporaries, to what my generation has lived through, experienced, seen, and heard," as he himself wrote, he was the critical chronicler of Germany’s history at mid-century.

The hbs Nigeria & West Africa office is based in Abuja, with a liaison office in Lagos. From here we run our programmes on Sustainable Nigeria, Megacity Lagos, Sustainable West Africa and Gender Democracy. Meet the team members and find their e-mail contacts.
