Who is hbs?

The Heinrich Böll Stiftung (hbs) is a political foundation affiliated with the Green Party in Germany. The hbs Abuja Office acts as a people-centric green think-tank and dialogue platform. We work with activists and thinkers in civil society, business and politics to stimulate public debate and action for a socially just and sustainable Nigeria. The Democracy at Work component of our programme focuses on issues such as the promotion of civic rights and public participation in political decision-making. Going forward, the component is envisaged to include a strong emphasis on the promotion of gender democracy and feminism in Nigeria.

Who are we looking for?

Hbs is looking for a full-time Programme Manager who can develop, coordinate and manage all projects under the Democracy at Work component of the Abuja Office. The ideal individual is a highly motivated self-starter, who is as comfortable in a boardroom as in a community roundtable seminar. A person with experience in promoting civic, human and women's rights. Someone with a network of contacts among activists, civil society organisations, academia and media.
 

What will be your key roles and responsibilities?

Strategic:
  • Analyse national, regional and international socio-political developments relevant to the Democracy at Work component in order to adapt the conceptual approach and project activities
  • Represent and promote the Foundation’s strategies and principles at stakeholder meetings, networks, conferences and other events
  • Identify, provide support to and actively collaborate with partners, including of trainings and orientation
 
Project Management:
  • Develop, plan, implement, monitor/evaluate and report on (including financial) all programme activities under the Democracy at Work Component
  • Plan and support the organisation of events
  • Manage and monitor contracts with partner organizations, contractors and consultants
  • Manage the component’s budget
Networking and Communication:
  • Maintain contacts with the programme relevant national and international organisations as well as journalists in mainstream media and social media influencers
  • Contribute to the website and other social media channels of the office
  • Maintain a supporter and contact database
 
What are some of the mandatory requirements?
  • Master Degree in Political Science, Development Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, International Relations, or related fields
  • At least five years of relevant experience in a senior position, preferably with an international organisation working in Nigeria
  • A demonstrated ability to advocate for women’s rights issues locally, nationally, and ideally internationally, including an ability to initiate and follow through on advocacy
  • A passion for civic engagement and social justice as well as a demonstrated commitment to the goals and priorities of the organisation
  • Excellent understanding of civic rights issues as well as gender and diversity concepts
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent project cycle management skills, including experience in M&E
  • Good knowledge of budget planning and controlling
  • Good knowledge of MS Office, MS Excel, power point
  • Good knowledge of common social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook)
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Highly motivated, proactive individual with demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities
  • Ability to work within a diverse and multicultural setting
  • Familiarity with feminist theory and practice is desirable
