Dossier of Registered and Unregistered Pesticides in the Nigerian Market

Compiled finds on registered, traded, and used pesticides in Nigeria.

The widespread use of chemical pesticides presents significant risks to human health, biodiversity, and the economy, particularly where regulatory oversight, transparency, and precautionary measures are weak. The likelihood of harm is shaped by three key factors: exposure levels, product toxicity, and access to accurate information. Ensuring public awareness and full disclosure of pesticide risks is essential to enabling informed decision-making and promoting safer, more responsible use.

Grounded in the constitutional and human rights principle of the “Right to Know,” as enshrined in Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Section 39(1) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, citizens are entitled to information that safeguards their health and well-being. While agrochemical companies bear responsibility for the impacts of their products, government institutions are mandated to protect the environment and public health. In response, the Alliance for Action on Pesticides in Nigeria (AAPN) has developed a comprehensive dossier detailing registered, traded, and used pesticides in Nigeria. The dossier categorizes pesticides, analyses active ingredients, showcases potential effects on human health and biodiversity, highlights the local and international regulatory status of the pesticides, and presents recommendations to mitigate associated risks.
