Who We Are and What We Do

The Abuja office works with activists, thinkers and networkers in civil society, business and politics to stimulate public debate and action for a socially just and sustainable Nigeria.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation has been active in Nigeria since 1995. In 2002, the office in Lagos was permanently staffed for the first time with a seconded country officer. Since 2011, the office has been located in the capital Abuja. The foundation works with actors in civil society, business and politics to promote critical engagement with the dominant belief that progress can only occur through carbon-intensive growth. We encourage gender-sensitive, socially and environmentally sustainable alternatives that too can drive progress. In addition, the foundation is committed to promoting democratic space for civil society and to protecting the rights of marginalised social groups, especially women. The liaison office in Lagos supports initiatives for a socially inclusive and sustainable design of the metropolis.

In order to achieve its goals, the foundation organises dialogues, commissions research studies for new knowledge, packages them into innovative awareness-raising measures for the general public, advises partners on project conception and implementation, and offers opportunities for international exchange.
